I now realize, that gardening at the Wylie-Streeter Gardening project boils down to, quite simply, a battle vs. the weeds. The tomatoes look good, but the soil is pure hardpan. There should be a winter cover such as rye in order to keep the weed seeds at bay. Weeds are the enemy. A very persistent enemy. I wish my plants grew half as fast as said weeds. Sigh. I cultivated the plot this afternoon. I want the uprooted weeds to die of dehydration, so I won't water the plants until tomorrow.
